Firefighters put a quick end to an out of control garage fire in Tigard.
Just after 5 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, callers dialed 911 to report smoke pouring out from the home at 12435 SW Knoll Dr. Once firefighters arrived on scene, flames had engulfed an attached garage and begun to spread into the home's attic.
Using chainsaws, fire crews took to the roof and cut holes through the shingles in an effort to vent heat. The holes also allowed for easier access to the flames themselves. In the end, the blaze was under control in just 15 minutes. While the garage suffered the most damage from the flames, the rest of the home was damaged by the resulting smoke.
As efforts to contain the fire were getting under way, another crew searched the home for any occupants. Fortunately, the family of five that lived there was not home when the fire started. They are now staying with nearby relatives.
