Tigard woman who fought off boyfriend: 'I was desperate for my life'
TIGARD, OR (KPTV) -
Jekyll and Hyde. That is how Michelle Shipley described her former boyfriend Paul Arnsberg.
Throughout their 6-month relationship, Shipley said Arnsberg had major mood swings that often turned violent.
But nothing prepared her for what happened on the afternoon of Feb. 28.
As she was getting ready for work, she said he became enraged when she wouldn't sleep with him.
"Paul just, he flew into the bathroom and went straight for my throat and he started choking me," Shipley said. "He was actually foaming at the mouth. It didn't even look like him. He looked completely different."
Shipley said Arnsberg's hands were wrapped so tightly around her neck, she could barely breathe. At one point, she even passed out.
When she came to, Shipley said Arnsberg was still choking her, so she grabbed a knife from the bathroom counter.
Ironically, it was a gift from Arnsberg.
"I hesitated because I didn't want to hurt him. I didn't want to use the knife. And I finally realized he wasn't going to let go of my throat," Shipley said.
She stabbed him five times before he let go and she ran out of the house.
"I was desperate for my life. I knew if I didn't do what I had done, he would've killed me," she said.
Arnsberg managed to escape. It wasn't until about a month later that police arrested him after a long standoff.
Shipley said watching his arrest unfold on the news that night brought huge relief.
But now she's struggling to get back on her feet. She had been living with Arnsberg and working for him. So she has nowhere to go and is in desperate need of a job.
Arnsberg's preliminary hearing is set for April 1.
