Chemical spill leads to evacuation of Gresham businesses

GRESHAM, OR (KPTV) -

Two Gresham businesses were evacuated after a container full of nitric acid waste spilled Thursday morning.

It happened at Advanced Precision Anodizing on Northeast 244th Ave. off Halsey Street at around 11 a.m.

Firefighters said the material is a byproduct of metal plating. It had a reaction inside its tote leading to the spill.

Around 100 gallons spilled and hazmat teams were called to the scene.

Firefighters said no workers were exposed to the chemicals, but the business was evacuated, along with a neighboring building.

One person was taken to the hospital with a medical condition that may have been related to the stress of the event, according to crews at the scene.

Once hazmat crews determine there's no further hazard, they'll turn it over to a cleanup contractor to dispose of the chemicals.
