Water main break shuts down north Portland intersection

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A large water main break caused a big mess and a bulge in the road in north Portland on Friday morning.

The bulge was swelling up under the sidewalk and road near North Lombard Street and Reno Avenue, not far from Terminal 4 at the Port of Portland.

City water officials said it's unlikely a sinkhole will form, despite initial fears of a sinkhole "as big as a sedan."

Fourteen homes have minimal water pressure and the intersection has been closed off while the water bureau works to fix the water main break. Traffic is being directed to a single lane and drivers were encouraged to avoid the intersection.

The main that broke was an 8-inch cast iron pipe, and a city official said the pipe should be fixed soon. The street will be drivable again with temporary paving by Friday evening, but full street repairs may take days, or even weeks.
