The Oregon Humane Society has seen its share of fat cats, but a large, lovable feline that arrived at the shelter Thursday is one of its largest cats ever.

Stuie weighs 29 pounds and is now seeking a home through the shelter. Stuie's previous owners moved and his foster parent is no longer able to care for him.

About 53 percent of cats in America are considered to be overweight. It's safe to say Stuie fits into that category.

"Anyone will gain body weight when they consume more calories than they burn as fuel for energy," said Sharon Harmon, the Humane Society's executive director.

Harmon said the Humane Society will give Stuie's new owner a free case of low-calorie cat food and a laser pointer for exercise.

Weight loss plans for cats need to be approached carefully, a Humane Society spokeswoman said. Any overweight cat should have a physical exam by a vet, plus blood and urine tests.

So, how does Stuie compare to some of the other large cats in Humane Society history?

Currently, there's more than one chubby animal up for adoption at the Humane Society.  An obese dog named Sammy weighs 83 pounds, which is more than triple the weight of a typical beagle.
