HILLSBORO, OR (KPTV) -

Visitors were in for a rude awakening this morning when an alleged drunk driver crashed into the parking lot of the Econo Lodge early Saturday morning.

Fire units and police responded to 622 Southeast 10th Avenue just after 5:30 a.m.

When they arrived they smelled the strong odor of natural gas and soon discovered that the car had hit a gas line as well as a power box, which knocked out electricity in the immediate area.

Responders went door-to-door at the motel to wake everyone up and tell them to evacuate.

About 15-20 people were cleared from the rooms, and 10th Avenue was closed while the gas company was called to the scene.

The road was reopened and people were allowed to go back into their rooms about three hours later.

The driver of the car, who was the lone occupant of the vehicle, was not injured.  However he was arrested.

A Hillsboro Police spokesman said Samuel Montano-Service, age 20, is now facing charges that include DUII, criminal mischief and reckless driving.
