SAN FRANCISCO, CA (KPTV) -

While visiting his hometown of San Francisco during spring break, a Lewis and Clark College football player was fatally shot after the shooter asked if he was in a gang.

Friends identified Jacob Valdiviezo, 19, as the victim in the early Saturday morning shooting in the city's Mission District, according to Fox affiliate KTVU.

Valdiviezo was a sophomore who played wide receiver for the Pioneers, according to the team's website. A spokeswoman for the college confirmed Valdiviezo's death to KPTV.

Valdiviezo was attending Lewis and Clark and playing on the football team.

San Francisco police say the teen was walking home with a friend when a car pulled up next to them at 3:06 a.m.

A man in his 30s got out of the car, asked him if he was in a gang, shot the 19-year-old and left, according to police.

Valdiviezo died at a hospital.

Police are still searching for the shooter.

Staff at Lewis and Clark College says they are respecting the family's wishes for privacy at this time, and interviews were not being granted.

The school will make an announcement about memorial plans, once they are established.
