Woodburn priest pleads guilty to child sex abuse

Posted: Updated:

A scandal that rocked a Woodburn neighborhood neared a conclusion Monday with a guilty plea.

Father Angel Perez served at Saint Luke's Catholic Church when Woodburn police arrested him for child sex abuse last August.

Police said he abused a 12-year old boy who was sleeping over at his home after a community event. The boy told investigators Father Perez offered him beer then touched him as well as touched himself.

The victim said he ran out of the house and was chased down by Perez who later drove to his family's home and begged for forgiveness.

Perez told police he drank too much that night and at some point blacked out and doesn't remember what happened.

On Monday, Perez admitted to the abuse as well as driving drunk and giving alcohol to a minor.

He faces 75 months in prison.

Staff at Saint Luke's wouldn't comment Monday, but the Portland Archdiocese did saying they've been vigilant in providing a safe environment for all parishioners and that the misconduct of even one person is a reminder that those efforts must never be relaxed.

They said they are keeping the victim and his family in their prayers.

They also said, "We also ask for prayers for the family and friends of Father Perez and prayers for forgiveness. Yet forgiveness does not exclude the consequences of justice under our nation's laws. Father Perez is now facing those consequences."

In addition to his prison time, Perez will have nearly four years probation.
