EMTs to try out SUVs in Vancouver

Posted: Updated:

Instead of a fire truck, the next time people in Vancouver have an emergency, an SUV may pull up to their door.

The Vancouver Fire Department is starting a pilot program to respond to medical calls.

The three-month trial includes the use of SUVs instead of a fire engine and full crew.

Chief Joe Molina said the goal is to keep fire trucks available for life-threatening emergencies and fires.

The new rescue units will be in service 10 hours a day, four days a week during peak hours.

The chief said they will monitor data collected daily and make adjustments to the pilot project each week as needed.
