PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Music filled the University of Portland campus Tuesday, along with leaders from the Catholic church.

Nearly 40 abbots, archbishops and bishops, along with 200 priests, came together to welcome the new leader of the Catholic Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon, Archbishop Alexander Sample.

Before coming to Oregon, he served many positions in the Diocese of Marquette, Michigan including Bishop.

He has also served as a consultant to the United State Conference of Catholic Bishops committee. He currently serves on the USCCB subcommittee on Native American Catholics and Catechism.

He takes the place of Archbishop John Vlazny, who is retiring after 15 years.

During Sample's homily, he thanked the former archbishop, and a standing ovation followed.

To celebrate his new appointment and to get to know the community, Archbishop Sample is planning to travel throughout Oregon to say mass.

The Portland Archdiocese of Oregon serves more than 415,000 Catholics, according to its website. It is the second-oldest archdiocese in the United States following Baltimore.
