ASTORIA, OR (KPTV) -

A Coast Guard crew of an Astoria-based boat recovered more than 3.3 tons of marijuana, intercepting the smugglers' shipment off the coast of California on Sunday.

The smugglers' boat was first spotted by a Coast Guard aircraft during routine patrol Sunday morning.

The suspects then began dumping bales of marijuana overboard as the boat sped south to avoid authorities.

Officials said the Coast Guard Cutter Alert, a boat homeported in Astoria, went to the area and recovered 245 bales of marijuana from the Pacific Ocean, about 90 miles west of San Nicolas Island, CA.

Commander Daniel Pickles said the Coast Guard was able to "disrupt this smuggling threat" and recover "a huge amount of drugs."

The Coast Guard said drug cartels often use sea routes along the Pacific Ocean to move their illegal cargo.
