Sign on Sunset principal's truck: '52 students in a class is too many'

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A local high school principal is making sure everyone knows how he feels about class sizes with a billboard attached to his pickup.

The sign in the back of John Huelskamp's truck says: "Say yes to our schools! 52 students in a class is too many."

"I not only want to remind folks of the fact that these are our schools, this is our future," said the principal at Sunset High School.

Huelskamp said when people see his sign, many stop to ask questions about it, which is especially important due to an upcoming ballot measure.

The Beaverton School District has a levy on next month's ballot aimed at protecting teaching positions and pushing for smaller class sizes.

The district has cut $142 million from its budget over the last five years, along with 16 school days and 640 teaching positions.

"By posting that on a sign on my truck, I feel very comfortable putting that out there," Huelskamp said. "Is it a reality that I'm proud of and want to continue? Absolutely not."
