Man who killed family dog with knife gets 6 months in prison

A Forest Grove man accused of killing his family's dog will spend six months behind bars.

Michael Burns was arrested in December 2012. A family member told deputies he had cut their golden retriever's throat with a knife after an altercation with the animal.

He pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated animal abuse, animal abuse and animal neglect Wednesday. His sentence includes five years probation, anger management sessions and he is not allowed to have any contact with animals for 15 years.

Another defendant in the case, Elizabeth Carter, pleaded guilty to animal neglect. She was sentenced to five years probation, 80 hours community service and is not allowed to have contact with animals for five years.
