Plan to remove bike lanes meets resistance

VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

Cyclists in Vancouver are voicing their concern over a new plan that the city is considering to make the roads safer.

The issue at hand centers on the safety of bike lanes along Macarthur Boulevard. City officials say the lanes are too close to drainage slopes, creating a dangerous situation for riders.

Many cyclists are concerned that the solution would force bikers to merge with 35 mile-per-hour traffic, which could be even more dangerous.

A group of concerned citizens has started a letter writing campaign aimed at city officials with the hopes of changing their decision.  They urge for the expansion of the bike lane rather than getting rid of it.

At this point, city officials say they are still in the process of collecting data and continuing to evaluate a variety of options.

A final decision on the ultimate striping plan after pavement resurfacing has not yet been made.
