Hawks Al Horford cheers for brother Jon and Michigan in Final Four
ATLANTA (CBS46) -
Atlanta Hawks center Al Horford has a tie to one of the Final Four teams. His younger brother Jon plays for Michigan.
The brothers will play at the same time Saturday night, Al Horford with the Hawks at Phillips Arena and Jon Horford with Michigan at the Georgia Dome.
"It's just exciting. He was here watching me a few years ago going through the Final Four in Atlanta and now here's here, so we're super excited," Al Horford said.
Al Horford can't wait to turn the tables and cheer for his brother in the Final Four, who wears No. 15 and is a forward with the Michigan Wolverines.
"It's special for me for my family. My dad can't believe it. He's enjoying all this, we're all loving it. It's a great experience and a great honor," Al Horford said.
Al Horford said he and Jon Horford used to battle on the court when they were younger, and calls the 6'10" red shirt sophomore a good player.
"He's a good defender, pick and roll type of guy," Al Horford said.
Al Horford played in and won two back to back national championships with Florida. One of them was during the last Final Four tournament played in Atlanta in 2007.
"It's a great feeling. You can't compare it to anything and it's one of the moments you don't realize that you accomplish, I don't think I fully did when we won those championships, but after some years it kind of sinks in you realize how special your group was and what you've done," Al Horford said.
Al Horford would like to see his brother have a similar experience. He gave Jon Horford some advice at the beginning of March Madness.
"Just to enjoy it. I told him starting the Sweet 16, I was like listen, I told him the Sweet 16 game was going to be their hardest game, so enjoy it have fun and just take in the experience and just leave it all out on the court," Al Horford said.
Al Horford said if Michigan advances to the championship game on Monday night, he'll be there. The Hawks are off and he hopes to be in the stands rooting on his brother.
The Horford brothers come from a big basketball family. Their dad Tito was the first player from the Dominican Republic to play in the NBA.
