Heated exchanges between Arias prosecutor, expert

Posted: Updated:

Testimony has wrapped for the day Monday in the Jodi Arias murder trial as the prosecutor worked to undermine a defense witness' credibility and accused her of being biased.

Arias is on trial for the death of her former boyfriend Travis Alexander.

Prosecuting attorney Juan Martinez questioned psychotherapist Alyce LaViolette about her resume and credibility.

Later, Martinez noted how LaViollette apologized to Arias upon their first meeting for having read her journals. LaViolette denied the accusations. She resumes testimony at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in Maricopa County Superior Court.

LaViolette once was a speaker at a conference where she analyzed Snow White in the context of domestic violence.

Martinez attacked her credibility for taking part in a discussion about a fairytale. He raised questions Monday about whether she fudged her resume in describing her role in the conference.

LaViolette is a key witness for Arias as she tries to convince a jury that she killed Travis Alexander in self-defense after he was abusive toward her. Prosecutors say she planned the attack in a jealous rage.

Proceedings were delayed almost 90 minutes Monday as all of the main players were summoned to the judge's chambers.

CBS 5 News journalist Elizabeth Erwin, who is reporting directly from the courtroom, said defense attorneys Kirk Nurmi and Jennifer Willmott, LaViolette and Arias went into chambers with the judge while Martinez remained in the courtroom.

As LaViolette, a psychotherapist who was set to return for cross-examination by the prosecution, was released from the chambers, Martinez then went inside.

Shortly after, two family members of Alexander's family were taken from the court through a side door, adding to the confusion for the delayed start.

Last week, dismissed Juror No. 5 stunned the court when she showed up to watch the proceedings from the gallery.

And Thursday, LaViolette, who has testified for more than a week, was cross-examined by Martinez and the first questions were fired at her about the Snow White references.

LaViolette testified Thursday about Arias' volatile relationship with her ex-boyfriend and claims Arias was a victim of domestic violence.

The prosecution claims Arias killed Alexander in a jealous rage, while Arias maintains she killed him in self-defense.

Alexander's body was found in his bathroom in June 2008. He had been stabbed 27 times, had his throat slit and was shot in the head.

Arias faces a possible death sentence if she's convicted of first-degree murder.
