Girl reunited with stolen bike months later

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

When Jane Henry posted her 1987 Trek Elance 330 on the Stolen Bike Registry last November, she didn't have much hope of getting it back.

She knew every detail about her mint-condition 52-cm frame except the most important one – the bike serial number printed underneath.

Henry says it's been a tough year. She lost her bike, then she lost her job. She had barely gotten herself out of bed Saturday to go Fred Meyer Saturday with no money to buy groceries.

But it's a good thing she did.

As her roommate slammed on the brakes to avoid hitting a car that had cut them off, Henry looked out the window and saw her Trek Elance locked outside the grocery store.

"I just glanced out and all of a sudden screamed: ‘That's my bike!'" Henry said.

Henry said she had no idea what to do. With adrenaline pumping, she called her local bike store, Joe Bike on Hawthorne, and the manager, Tess Velo, biked over to help her out.

"Her bike is super-recognizable so I really didn't have any doubt that it was hers," Velo said.

Before police could respond, Velo was there with picture and paperwork to back up Henry's paperwork.

Eventually, a young couple came out to get the bike. They had purchased it from a repair man in Gresham who said he got it from Goodwill.

"I could remember a whole lot of details about my bike," Henry said. "I think that's why it was so easy for me to spot it out of the corner of my eye."

Sure enough – Henry knew every sticker, paint chip and scratch on the bright red bike.

She even showed the couple a scar she got from the same crash that scratched the frame.

"The more details she provided, eventually they were like, ‘Yeah,'" Velo said.

According to police, the bike belonged to Henry. The couple was simply out the $380 they paid to purchase the stolen bike.
