Ex-cheerleading coach sentenced after sex with teen football player

A former special education assistant and cheerleading coach from Gresham pleaded guilty to sex abuse charges as part of a plea deal Monday.

Police said Amy Dial had sex with a 17-year-old football player from Centennial High School in 2008 and 2009.

She was sentenced to 120 days in jail, five years of probation, and she has to register as a sex offender. She is banned from working in schools and having contact with minors.

It's unclear how Dial met the victim or where the abuse took place, but police said the victim was not one of Dial's students and had no association with the cheerleading team.

"I'm just really surprised," said neighbor Christine Bierman. "She's a family lady, and she has children herself. And she was at one time training to become a teacher herself."

According to Wendy Reif, a spokeswoman for the Centennial School District, Dial worked for about 10 years at several elementary schools. She also was the junior varsity cheerleading coach from 2004-2006. Dial left the district at the end of the 2011-2012 school year, before she was arrested.

Police said they learned Dial was having sex with the teen in 2009, but at the time he didn't want to press charges or cooperate with the investigation. That changed last summer when the victim came forward.
