Reason behind firing of West Salem hoops coach unclear

SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

A high school teacher who was fired from his coaching job is speaking out.

Kevin Goin said he was let go after leading the West Salem High School basketball team to its most successful season ever and a 23-3 record.

School Principal Ed John only said there were "some things that were taking place that weren't the right match for our program."

But Goin said he never received an opportunity to defend himself or correct any issues.

"I really think it comes down to we've got one or two parents that don't necessarily like - I don't know if it's me - but don't like the way I do things," Goin said. "Whether it's game management or whether it's how I get kids to play as a team (or) as a group."

Nate Erickson, a parent of a player, said there are a lot of upset parents over the ousting of Goin. He wants the coach reinstated.

"A lot of community members who are asking the question, 'Why?'" Erickson said. "We can only hope that a wrong will be righted."

Goin remains a science teacher at West Salem High School.

He said he was given the option of resigning for personal reasons but said he chose to be fired because he didn't want to lie.
