Sporting goods store robbed of thousands in high-end bats

Thieves swiped thousands of dollars worth of merchandise from his store, and now the town of Salem is rallying behind a local business owner to get it back.

Police say someone robbed the Westside Sports Store on the 500 block of Northwest Patterson Street sometime Monday night, taking countless baseball bats worth hundreds of dollars each.

The owner tells FOX 12 he got to work Tuesday morning and found most of his high-end, top quality baseball bats gone, and with them countless other items from his store.

Police believe it's possible the thieves would try to resell these expensive items, but not if a group of little league coaches have anything to say about it.

"With a baseball store, you're talking about a baseball community," said Salem Little League board member Mike Vogt.

"If they're going to sell them, it's going be to someone in the league."

To fight back, the league says everyone in town is on the lookout for the stolen merchandise from Westside Sports. Coaches, parents and even pawn shops have been warned about the stolen goods.

Vogt says their hope is to stop the thieves from reselling the stolen goods and instead return them to their rightful home.

"They need to drop it off some place, call a tip line or take it back to where it needs to be, and hopefully it doesn't happen again," said Vogt.

Police say they are actively searching for the person or people responsible, but at this point there is no suspect description to go on.

Anyone who knows anything is encouraged to call the Salem Police Department.
