Homemade bomb explodes, causes 'disfiguring injuries'

Posted: Updated:

Two men suffered extensive injuries in Eastern Oregon when a homemade bomb detonated Sunday night.

The Ontario Argus Observer reports one was taken to Boise for treatment, the other to Portland. Their injuries were described as life-threatening and disfiguring.

Authorities said the two were from Ontario, and they believe the explosion happened west of Vale, a town 15 miles west of Ontario.

Investigators said a third person brought the two to the hospital, touching off a scare that explosives were in the vehicle. None were found.

The injured men were described as aged 59 and 60. Authorities searched their residence Sunday, briefly evacuating neighboring houses. So far, police haven't said whether more bombs were found there.

Federal investigators have joined the case, along with local agencies, the Oregon State Police and a bomb squad from Idaho.
