PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A Portland firefighter had just crossed the finish line of the Boston Marathon when she heard the first blast.

Christine Pezzulo didn't think much of it. In a phone interview with Fox 12, Pezzulo said she figured it was just fireworks as part of the festivities of the annual event.

"Then, when the second blast went off, I knew it wasn't fireworks," she said. "I knew it wasn't good."

The explosions killed at least three people, including an 8-year-old boy, the Boston Globe reported. Dozens more were injured.

Pezzulo said she turned around, no more than 50 yards from the finish line, and saw nothing but black smoke filling the air.

She had a loved one waiting for her in the crowd and her first instinct was to make sure she was OK.

"So, I went on a quest to do that," Pezzulo said. "It took several minutes. It seemed like forever. Everything seemed so surreal and in slow motion."

Pezzulo and her loved one were not hurt.

In the moment immediately after the blasts started going off, Pezzulo said she wasn't so sure escaping the area without injuries would even be possible.

"Honestly, I thought it might have been my time," she said. "I didn't know if there was going to be another explosion."

Pezzulo said a stranger on the street offered them a ride to their hotel, where they hunkered down for the remainder of the day.

Pezzulo is scheduled to fly back to Portland from Boston on Tuesday morning.
