Chepe is reunited with his owner. (The Animal Foundation)
LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
It's a lesson in the importance of microchipping your pet.
On Thursday, April 4, a 10-year-old male Chihuahua was found wandering the streets of Las Vegas. A resident managed to coax the animal into her arms.
She brought the dog to The Animal Foundation on North Mojave Road in hopes he would be reunited with his owners or perhaps adopted.
The Animal Shelter immediately scanned the dog for a microchip, finding one. It turned out the dog, Chepe, had been adopted from the facility in 2008.
One call put Chepe back into the arms of his owner, a woman identified as Rosadio. It turned out Chepe had escaped from his family's home and ran away while they were moving in October 2011.
"Microchipping your pet, and keeping the microchip information up-to-date is so important," said The Animal Foundation Marketing and Public Relations Manager Meghan Scheibe. "We get so many emails, calls and Facebook messages from residents after their pet is lost. When we ask if the pet was chipped, the answer is usually, 'No, I didn't think my pet would ever get out.' You never know what might happen. We hope that Chepe's story will encourage residents to microchip their pets, just in case the unthinkable does happen."
For more information about microchipping or to inquire about adoption, visit The Animal Foundation at www.animalfoundation.com.
