Five children have been carried from a stalled vehicle through a flooded West Michigan street.
MLive.com reports that Melissa Kolenda was taking photos in Grand Rapids on Thursday when she noticed the vehicle had stopped running and wouldn't restart.
A police officer and firefighter helped Kolenda carry the children to dryer ground. They also helped two women to safety.
Kolenda says the water was waist-high and there was a strong current. She says the car eventually became completely submerged.
Heavy rains have pushed a number of rivers in Michigan's Lower Peninsula over flood stage and forced officials to close many roads across the state.
The Red Cross of West Michigan on Thursday opened a shelter in Newaygo County for Fremont area residents displaced by the rain and high water.
