Truck hauling electronics bursts into flames

Posted: Updated:

A tire blew out on a truck hauling electronics leading to a fire that shut down the highway near Rhododendron for hours Thursday.

The Freightliner truck pulling a trailer was on Highway 26 at 7:45 a.m. when the tire blew out.

The driver, Robert Axmaker, 74, of Prineville, said a fire then started and quickly spread at the front of the truck.

He got out of the truck and was not hurt.

Hoodland Fire District firefighters responded and had the fire out within 25 seconds of arriving at the scene.

One firefighter was taken to the hospital with a shoulder injury.

Oregon Department of Transportation workers blocked the highway until the truck and trailer could be removed by a tow company. The highway was open again at 12:30 p.m.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
