Muslim community reacts to Boston bombers' Islamic ties

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

We've learned the brothers accused of the marathon bombings are from Russia and are believed to be Muslim.

Once word spread to the Muslim community, they quickly condemned the actions by the two brothers.

The local Muslim community is calling the brother's actions appalling and they said they are mourning with the rest of America and trying to understand why they did what they did.

Once the bombing suspects were identified, officials were able to determine that the brothers are from the Russian Caucasus region and had some links to Islamic websites.

The brother's uncle told the media that the two men shamed the family's name and the Chechen community.

"Somebody radicalized them, but it's not my brother who just moved back to Russia, who spent his life bringing bread to their table," he said.

The local Muslim community is angry and many are shocked by the actions of the two brothers.

They said as Muslims, the brothers were led down the wrong path.

"Because not only are what they're doing is not supported by the religion it is un-Islamic and it's actually anti-Islamic because it breaks some fundamental principals within Islam," said Harris Zafar, with the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.

Local Muslims say they stand by their fellow Americans and want them to know they want to protect this country from this type of violence and evil.

Many in the Muslim community are concerned that when someone associated with Islam does something like this, there will be retribution against the entire Muslim community.

They want Oregonians to know that they feel just as much pain and anger as they do about what happened in Boston.
