DONALD, OR (KPTV) -

The Marion County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a 4-year-old boy at a home in Donald.

On Sunday, officials identified the child as Cody R. Hall, who died at the scene from a single gunshot wound.

Deputies said they responded to the 1000 block of Main Street Northeast about 5:30 p.m. Saturday to a call of a gun being fired inside a home.

News of the tragedy spread quickly around the small town.

"Apparently, he used to sit on the porch with his grandpa and wave and smile, and people would wave back," said Shawna Gentert, who lives in Donald.

Investigators spent the evening interviewing the parents of the boy and trying to figure out what exactly happened.

"We're a small town, but we have a big heart, and I'm sure we'll be doing a lot of hand-holding and hugging for a while as we try to help this family through this," added Gentert.

The medical examiner and the district attorney were at the home this evening as investigators processed the scene.

The investigation remains active and the medical examiner will conduct an autopsy on the child on Monday morning.

Officials will not release the type of firearm involved.

Once the investigation is complete, Marion County detectives and the district attorney's office will review the case and determine whether a crime occurred and whether any charges will be filed.
