PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Police are crediting some northeast Portland residents for helping them capture a burglary suspect early Saturday afternoon.

Jay Curtis Voshall, 48, was booked into the Multnomah County Jail and is now facing theft and burglary charges.

A Portland Police spokesman says, at about 1:45 p.m. Saturday, officers responded to a report of a stranger lurking in the back yard of a home in the 3800 block of Northeast 68th Avenue.

A neighbor, who had spotted the man and called police, then called the homeowner about the intruder.

The homeowner went outside to check things out and wound up face to face with the suspect, who was rummaging through things in a detached garage.

The burglar ran away. When police arrived, they brought a K-9 unit and began the searching the neighborhood.

Neighbors helped officers by reporting sightings of the suspect as he was jumped over fences and ran through back yards.

Police wound up cornering the suspect behind a home in the 4000 block of Northeast 66th Avenue, where they arrested him without further incident.

Portland Police are saying thanks to the residents for their vigilance and assistance in locating the burglary suspect.
