Hillsboro schools looking at 50 teacher layoffs

HILLSBORO, OR (KPTV) -

Fifty teachers in Hillsboro could lose their jobs.

School district representatives said they are looking to eliminate $8.5 million from the 2013-2014 budget.

Over the past five years, the district has cut 240 positions through resignations and retirements. Administrators said that likely won't cover it this year.

Those affected by possible layoffs will be alerted by their school's principal by May 3. Fifty full-time positions could be cut, with 38 of those from across the district and 12 in specialized areas.

Administrators said layoffs would result in larger class sizes.

There will be a listening session at 7 p.m. Thursday at Brown Middle School, 1505 S.W. Cornelius Pass Road, to discuss the budget and potential layoffs.
