A local boy's culinary creation has him in the running to be a top child chef.

Reed Syler, a third grader at Dorothy Fox Elementary School in Camas, is a finalist in Sodexo's Future Chefs National Challenge.

He bested the local competition with his "scrumptious salad rolls."

The goal of the competition is to teach kids about making healthy eating choices by encouraging them to make their own fun and nutritious salads.

Reed's recipe includes apples, carrots, cucumbers, lettuce and chicken wrapped in rice paper rolls.

In a YouTube video, Reed goes through the process of making his dish and concludes the clip with some sound advice.

"Always use organically grown products to get the best results," he said.

Reed was picked out of nearly 90 Camas students who presented their original spin on salads. His dish is now up against four others made by students at nearly 250 schools served by Sodexo's food service program in 28 states.

More than 1,000 students in all entered dishes in the competition.
