Oregon Ferret Shelter in jeopardy of closing

Posted: Updated:
OREGON CITY, OR (KPTV) -

A local ferret rescue is in jeopardy of closing. A couple runs the Oregon Ferret Shelter out of their Oregon City home. Clackamas County says the shelter is not in compliance with zoning laws and needs to apply for the proper permit.

Shelter owner David Mathis says they operate a nonprofit and don't have the money for a permit or the related costs. "It's very spendy. We are a nonprofit and have always been. We put everything we can into the animals health and shelter ... We just feel like we should be left alone and allowed to operate our shelter as we always have."

Mathis says they have hired a lawyer to work on their behalf. The shelter is currently home to about 100 ferrets.
