The Rose Festival Foundation's CEO unveiled the 2013 Rose Festival poster, souvenir pin and Rogue Brewery festival ale Wednesday as Portlanders received their first look at the art for this year's festival.
Every year, Oregon College of Art and Craft students compete to design a commemorative label for Oak Knoll Winery. This year's winner incorporated a photograph of his grandfather, who worked in Portland's shipyards.
"The inspiration is taken from Portland's party for the Rose Festival, and also the heritage of Oak Knoll Winery and then my own family's heritage, liking to go out, party, eat drink and have a good time - be the life of the party," said designer Jason Berlin.
In addition, the event served as the first chance to see cover art for a new book on the Portland Rose Festival. Published in the Arcadia Images of America series, the book features stories and photographs from the festival's 106-year history.
"There are a lot of facts in there about the time the Rose Festival started and about that particular era," said George Miller, the co-author. "(And) things that might be going on then, and of course the individuals themselves and a lot of quirky events."
The Rose Festival is less than four weeks away.
