At 6'6" tall, it's hard to believe Shylo Joseph is just 16 years old. But his above-average height came in handy early Tuesday morning, when he scared off a woman who broke into his family's home.
"I'm glad I was here," said Joseph, who plays basketball at Benson Tech High School.
His mother, Wendla Andrews, said the intruder broke in through the front door while she was sleeping on the living room couch at about 4 a.m. Tuesday. Shylo and his two young siblings were asleep upstairs.
Andrews said she woke up just as the robber grabbed a laptop next to her.
"I'm pulling tug of war with my laptop and this woman," said Andrews. "It happened so fast. As I'm pulling the laptop back and forth, I screamed as loud as I could for my son."
Upstairs, Shylo heard his mother screaming. He jumped out of bed, bolted down the stairs, and saw his mom struggling with the intruder in the living room.
"I just ran her out the door," he said. "I didn't even look at my mom and didn't even know what was going on. I just started chasing without even thinking."
Shylo said he chased the woman down the sidewalk but couldn't keep up since he was barefoot. He lost her after a few blocks when she met up with a man and disappeared behind an apartment complex.
Police said the woman left a trail of syringes and meth pipes that fell out of her purse.
"I'm so positive that she had to be high out of her mind," said Andrews.
Andrews is now on crutches since she tore a ligament in her knee struggling with the woman. But she's just thankful her other two kids, ages 1 and 6, didn't get hurt. There were signs the woman also rummaged around in their bedrooms upstairs.
The family said it's hard to sleep knowing the intruder is still out there.
If you have any information about the robbery, you're asked to call police.
