Oregon City teacher on leave after SnapChat photo sent to student

OREGON CITY, OR (KPTV) -

An Oregon City teacher has been placed on leave after police said he received and sent inappropriate photos through the photo sharing app SnapChat.

Oregon City police started their investigation into the teacher on Wednesday, two days after parents overheard Oregon City High School students talking about a fellow student who sent a partially nude photo of herself to one of her teachers.

The parents notified the school.

Meanwhile, word traveled quickly on social media, said police spokesman Jim Band, and the 16-year-old female student involved didn't show up for school Tuesday.

School district officials eventually spoke to the girl, then contacted police Wednesday afternoon.

"I think it's kind of shocking. You hear about this stuff happening on the news but you don't expect it to happen at your own high school, so it's kind of strange," said Luke Ehli, a senior at Oregon City High School.

Since the start of the investigation, police said they confirmed the teacher received at least one partially nude photo of the girl, and that he sent inappropriate photos of himself back to her. One of the photos was seen by other students, Band said.

The photos sent by the teacher were not nude pictures, according to police, but officers wouldn't elaborate on their content.

"That's very unprofessional, very much so and I'm hoping the allegations aren't true, but judging from what I've heard, I don't know," said one concerned parent.

The teacher has not been arrested at this point, and police are continuing to look into whether he committed a crime.

Investigators said they're concerned other students may have exchanged photos with the teacher.

SnapChat is an iPhone and Android app that allows users to send people photos, and the photos are then automatically deleted seconds after they're sent.

Oregon City school officials would only release the following statement:

A complaint regarding a teacher was received at Oregon City High School and the district office. The issue was referred to Oregon City Police for further investigation. The teacher was placed on leave pending the outcome of that investigation. We have no further comments at this time.
