Police: Man hit cashier with soda can during Beaverton robbery

Posted: Updated:

It was the perfect, sunny day for an evening in Beaverton City Park.

Dozens of families were playing there around 6:00 p.m. when police say 38-year-old Samuel Paul walked into a coffee kiosk and attacked the woman inside.

"A woman started screaming and I thought it was just a couple kids playing in the fountain," said Eileen Rice, who was sitting nearby. "I looked up and a guy (was) trying to take the till out of a coffee shop."

Police said it was a violent robbery.

The victim claims Paul pulled a can of Dr. Pepper from the refrigerator and repeatedly hit her in the face, knocking her to the ground.

"After the guy took off, her lip was bleeding and her cheek was swollen," Rice said.

The cash register was attached to the shop with a cord, so police say the robber scooped up as much cash as he could and ran across the park into his car.

Witnesses snapped photos as the man pulled away, which police later used to tie Paul to the crime. He was arrested about an hour later at the Franklin Apartment Complex.
