AUMSVILLE, OR (KPTV) -

A man is accused of assaulting his girlfriend's 6-month-old child.

Deputies said the boy was unconscious when he was brought to the Santiam Hospital in Stayton April 5. Robert Pinsky, 30, told doctors the baby had fallen off the couch.

Detectives said Pinsky was watching the boy while the child's mother, Shaanon Crouch, attended a class. Crouch and Pinsky lived together on Ninth Street in Aumsville, according to deputies.

The child was transferred to Doernbecher Children's Hospital in critical condition for more intensive treatment. He suffered head trauma, bone fractures and underwent surgery.

Doctors told investigators that the injuries were not consistent with falling off a couch.

Pinsky was arrested and charged with assault. His bail has been set at $150,000.

An OHSU spokesperson said Tuesday the child remains at the hospital in serious condition.

The family has started an online fundraising campaign for the baby at gofundme.com.
