PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

His weight loss journey has inspired people and pet owners across the country.

Now, Obie the dachshund is taking another important step with a much needed surgery.

Obie has dropped half his weight in the last eight months. He's down to 37 pounds after tipping the scales at 77 pounds when he was adopted last August.

He couldn't walk on his own then, but he can now.

"He's always had the personality where you can really tell he wants to interact and he wants to get around, so now that he can it's pretty exciting," said owner Nora Vanatta. "He's just getting to be a dog."

However, while he's able to move on his own, he's still got something slowing him down - excess skin because of all those lost pounds.

On Tuesday, surgeons helped take care of that. Obie was treated at Oregon Expert Vets, where surgeons planned to remove up to two pounds of skin.

It was essentially a "tummy tuck" for a dog.

"I'm excited to see how he moves and acts after he's full recuperated," Vanatta said.

The procedure was a success and Obie will be recovering from Tuesday's surgery for several weeks. He's still got a few more pounds to lose.

Vanatta said the goal is to get Obie down to a svelte 28 pounds.
