PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Damian Lillard of the Portland Trail Blazers is the NBA's Rookie of the Year.

The announcement was made at a press conference to honor Lillard on Wednesday at the Rose Garden.

The rookie point guard averaged 19 points and 6.5 assists for the season, along with 3.1 rebounds. He also averaged 38.6 minutes a game and played in all 82 games.

Lillard won the award unanimously and became just the fourth player in history to do so, joining Blake Griffin in 2011, David Robinson in 1990 and Ralph Sampson in 1984.

Lillard swept the Western Conference Rookie of the Month honors for every month of the season, something that has only been done seven other times.

He joined Oscar Robertson and Allen Iverson as the only rookies in NBA history to record at least 1,500 points and 500 assists.

Lillard broke Stephen Curry's NBA rookie record for 3-pointers made in a season, finishing with 185. He also became the first rookie to lead the NBA in total minutes played (3,167) in a season since Elvin Hayes in 1968-69.

Lillard was taken sixth overall in the 2012 NBA Draft.

As part of its support of the Rookie of the Year Award, Kia will donate a new 2014 Kia Sorento LX CUV to LifeWorks Northwest, a nonprofit mental health and addiction agency in the Portland metro-area.
