LAKE OSWEGO, OR (KPTV) -

A couple of local students could win their school thousands of dollars for design ideas for Van's shoes and skateboards.

Kids from Saint Stephen's Academy in Beaverton and Lake Oswego's Lakeridge High School are competing in the Van's Custom Culture contest.

The grand prize winning school in the nationwide contest will receive $50,000 for its art program.

More than 1,500 schools designed four pairs of custom sneakers for the first round of the competition.

The students from Lakeridge decided to design one of the sneakers into dragon boats.

"We've just worked really hard and it's always amazing to actually get something for our work and this is a great honor to be part of this competition," said Maddy Mier of St. Stephen's Academy.

The public can vote online for their favorite school's designs through May 13.

The top five, one from each region, will be announced on May 14.
