Vandals puncturing tires on cars and trucks in Gladstone

Posted: Updated:

Gladstone police say someone is going around targeting tires, but they're striking in a unique way.

Police said they have taken more than 30 reports of punctured tires in the last few months in area of town.

Police said one of the streets targeted is East Hereford Street just west of Oatfield Road.

Officials say dozens of cars had their tires punctured by something so small that lets the air out very slowly and whoever is doing it, is hitting the side wall of the tire, making it impossible to repair.

"It's rude, I don't know, it's disrespectful," said Shawna Young, "it's not ok and they need to be caught."

Young was one of those victims and she noticed something was wrong with a rear tire on her truck.

"It was obviously noticeable from the other tires, because I drove it one day and it was just running weird," said Young.

Gladstone police believe the culprit is using a small nail punch or some sort of ice pick to create a small hole on the tire side wall.

Owners don't usually notice there's anything wrong, until it's too late.

"I came home one day and I noticed the tire was getting flat. I told my mom who took it to Les Schwab and they told her there was a slash in the tire," added Young.

Until she gets a new tire, Shawna has her spare on the truck.

Gladstone police said the reports keep coming in from areas off East Gloucester Street and east of Hereford Street.

At the nearby Les Schwab Tire Center, workers say they've had more than 100 tires with the same puncture come in over the last few months.

The damage can't be repaired and owners have to buy a whole new tire.

"It's a lot of money. That's $400 dollars down the drain," said Young.

Police are now adding extra patrols in the area, especially at night - looking for anyone acting suspicious.

If you spot anything suspicious you're asked to call the non-emergency line at 503-655-8211.

Workers at Les Schwab said several of its stores from southeast Portland down to Oregon City have seen the same type damage.
