NOGALES, AZ (CBS5) -
A 35-year-old Tucson man was arrested Tuesday for attempting to smuggle more than two pounds of heroin into the U.S.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers flagged Calvin C. Howard III for secondary questioning as he crossed through the Morley Pedestrian Gate. Officers said they had detected possible drugs around his waist.
Howard attempted to flee back into Mexico and became combative when officers tried to take him into custody.
Once he was secured, officers said they removed two packages of heroin from around his waist and one smaller package from his navel.
The drugs, worth nearly $30,000, were seized. Howard was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations.
