Bill expected to ban teens from tanning beds

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

State lawmakers have passed a new bill banning children under the age of 18 from using tanning beds. House bill 2896 passed through the state senate Thursday and is expected to be signed by the Governor Saturday.

Katie Wilkes from Portland testified to support the ban and she hopes the measure will protect other young people from going through what she did. Three years ago, she was diagnosed with melanoma and she thinks it was the result of using tanning beds when she was a teen.

Wilkes says,"Be mad at me. I don't care.  It's really for your own good because I regret what I did. I really regret what I did and I don't think unless you have someone stopping you from doing it - it's just going to continue happening."

Wilkes invites people to join her for the melanoma walk at Wallace Park in Northwest  Portland Saturday.
