PHOENIX (CBS5) -
A teenager driving a stolen car attempted to run over a police officer during a traffic stop, Phoenix police said.
Hugo De Leon, 19, missed hitting the officer by mere feet, said Phoenix police spokesman Officer James Holmes.
A Phoenix police motor officer saw the vehicle heading southbound on Interstate 17 access road at Camelback Road at about 2:50 a.m. Saturday.
The driver stopped and the officer began to approach on foot, Holmes said. The driver looked directly at the officer and then accelerated toward the officer, Holmes said.
The car fled east on West Camelback Road, often swerving into oncoming lanes of traffic at high rates of speed in an effort to get away from police.
The suspect crashed into a cement wall in the area of North 19th Avenue and West Indian School Road.
De Leon was arrested without further incident. The teenager was booked into jail on charges of aggravated assault on a police officer, theft of a means of transportation, suspected extreme DUI and other charges.
Police investigators said the vehicle he was driving had been stolen from the area of 4700 N. Fifth St. on May 10.
