A big crowd turned out to welcome home the WHL champion Portland Winterhawks on Sunday night, and now the date and time has been set for a celebration in downtown Portland.
The Winterhawks will celebrate claiming the Ed Chynoweth Cup with a rally Tuesday at noon at Pioneer Courthouse Square.
Portland lifted the trophy after defeating the Edmonton Oil Kings 5-1 in Game 6 of the 2013 WHL Championship Series in Canada.
It was the third consecutive appearance in the WHL Championship Series for the Winterhawks, having lost the 2011 final and the 2012 final. This time, Portland emerged victorious, and won the third WHL championship in franchise history.
The Winterhawks also won WHL titles in 1982 and 1998.
Nineteen-year-old forward Ty Rattie, a St. Louis Blues prospect, was named the MVP of the 2013 WHL Championship series.
The Winterhawks will now represent the WHL at the 2013 Memorial Cup tournament in Saskatoon, SK. The tournament begins in less than a week.
