SAGINAW, Mich. (AP) -

The City of Saginaw is changing health benefits for hundreds of retirees as part of an effort to save about $3 million annually.

The Saginaw News reports Saginaw City Council on Monday approved the plan to put all of the city's about 740 retirees on the plan.

Informational meetings are expected in June about the changes, which take effect July 1. Officials say the plan will be enhanced coverage for some retirees, while it may reduce or offer comparable benefits for others. It's expected to result in higher costs for most.

City Manager Darnell Earley said he supports the idea for the change, saying it is "in the best interest of the city."
