A Chivas USA midfielder has been suspended for one match after he shoved a Timbers ball boy during the second half of Sunday's match at JELD-WEN Field.
The MLS handed down the suspension on Mario De Luna for "aggressively retrieving the ball" in the 86th minute of his team's 3-0 loss to the Timbers, a match carried live on FOX 12.
The referee gave de Luna a yellow card.
The MLS Players Union issued a statement in response to the suspension, saying the league "must eliminate ball boy antics."
"There should be no place in our game for off-field personnel to attempt to impact play on the field," the statement said.
Timbers owner Merritt Paulson then issued his own response to the players union on Twitter.
"Would love the MLS Player's Union to specify what ball boy's "antics" were. Ref had clearly called POR ball...ridiculous statement by MLSPU," he wrote.
