A disturbing incident reported on a TriMet bus has students at a local high school on alert.
According to an email obtained by FOX 12 that was sent by Lincoln High School's principal to parents, a female student claims that a man showed her a naked picture of himself while riding a TriMet bus after school on May 10.
The student boarded the bus at Southwest 16th and Columbia at around 4 p.m., the email stated. A clean-cut, middle-aged man asked her to take his photograph. The man handed her a smartphone with a naked picture of himself, the email stated. The girl became disgusted and moved away to sit by her friend.
The man got off the bus several blocks later, the email stated.
The girl's friend saw the incident and was able to provide a description of the man, the email stated. The family contacted TriMet and Portland Police.
"I've had conversations with people that I thought were a little odd, but I've never had anything like that happen to me," said Lincoln High School student Emma Butterfield.
School administrators are now encouraging parents to talk to their kids about the importance of being alert in public settings and how to respond if they face similar situations.
Parent Cara Chin told FOX 12 that having a daughter attend school in an urban setting makes the conversation that much more important.
"Just knowing where she is at all times, who she's with, how she's getting from place to place at all times," Chin said.
Chin's 15-year-old daughter, Madeleine, practices the buddy system as much as possible to get home, she said. It's a practice administrators encourage.
A spokeswoman for TriMet told FOX 12 that the agency is looking into the allegation mentioned in the email. There is no video surveillance available on the bus, she said.
Anyone with information about the alleged incident is asked to call the Portland Police Bureau.
