Off-duty officer helps capture escaped inmate

VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

An off-duty corrections officer played a vital role in the capture of an escaped inmate in Washington on Saturday.

Officer Brandy Boyer was on her way to work at the Larch Corrections Center around 5 a.m.

That's when she spotted an inmate she recognized near Padden Parkway and 162nd in Vancouver.

Boyer then called authorities and followed the man, identified as David McElroy, until officers could arrive.

At the same time, we're told, officials at Larch Corrections Center noticed McElroy was missing during their morning head count.

Officials say McElroy was able to climb a fence at the minimum security facility and put something over the razor wire to escape.

McElroy did suffer some razor wire cuts.

Clark County deputies teamed up with Vancouver police to arrest McElroy just before 6 Saturday morning.
