ALOHA, OR (KPTV) -

A man and his 11-year-old son are in critical condition after flames trapped them on the third story of their Aloha townhome Thursday morning.

Frantic 911 callers reported the fire on Southwest Jaden Drive at 4:47 a.m. Dispatchers could hear screams in the background as the callers described the burning three-story townhome.

Washington County deputies were first to respond and they tried to use a ladder to reach the family of three, but fire officials said the smoke and fire conditions proved to be too dangerous.

Once firefighters arrived, they rescued 40-year-old Jia Zeng, the mother of the 11-year-old, and brought her down a ladder from the third floor.

"There was an extensive amount of smoke in the home," said Cassandra Ulven, from Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue. "(There was) a lot of fire that firefighters encountered when they first entered the home. "

While rescuers provided medical treatment to Zeng, firefighters searched the home and found 11-year-old Tengyuan Huo in a second-story hallway. They brought him out the front door.

Moments later, Huo's father, 34-year-old Gang Huo, was found on the third floor and firefighters pulled him out of the home by way of a third-story window.

Paramedics treated all three at the scene and then rushed them to area hospitals.

Tengyuan Huo and his father, Gang Huo, are both in critical condition at Legacy Emanuel Hospital.

Jia Zeng is being treated at St. Vincent's Hospital. Her condition is unknown.

Fire officials said their quick response time helped them stop the flames from spreading to adjacent townhomes. Most of the fire damage happened in the first-floor garage, where the fire is believed to have started. It later stretched to the second floor and heavy smoke permeated every level of the home, officials said.

Crews had the fire extinguished after just 20 minutes, but hot spots remained hours later.

The fire's exact cause is still under investigation. Investigators are currently examining material evidence and burn patterns.
