Who beheaded Lincoln? School blames prank gone wrong

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

An historic statue of President Abraham Lincoln was beheaded at Lincoln High School on Wednesday night.

School principal Peyton Chapman said a few students apparently tried to move the statue from the foreign language wing to the gymnasium at the southwest Portland school.

While attempting to lower him over the gym balcony using a rope and pulley system, they dropped the statue onto the gym floor.

Lincoln's head was lopped off upon impact.

School administrators say they're not sure if they'll ever be able to fully restore the statue, but it may be possible to hire an artist who could at least repair the aesthetic damage.

In a letter to parents, Chapman wrote she believes it was intended to be a senior prank.

"I would rather see this be resolved responsibly and through the school as opposed to felony charges," Chapman wrote.

On Thursday, a Portland Public Schools spokesman said at least one student has come forward for being involved in the incident. Administrators have not yet handed out any punishment.
